The textbook for Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry is aligned with the adopted Common Core State Standards. Over the course of the year we will cover:
- Linear Relations & Functions
- Quadratic, Polynomial and Radical Relations & Functions
- Rational Relations & Functions
- Trigonometry Relations & Functions
- Logarithmic Functions.
The goal of this class is to investigate the Algebraic topics introduced in Algebra 1 in a more formal and in-depth manner. Topics will be explored through investigation, application of previous knowledge and through the introduction of new algebraic concepts. Upon a student's successful completion of this course, s/he should be fully prepared for Pre-Calculus.
It is my personal philosophy that, while this is a college-prep class, the "typical" high school student needs the opportunity to relearn a topic if s/he is driven to do so. I will allow students to "redo" homework assignments and "re-take" quizzes if s/he feels that a better understanding of the topic has been achieved. There are time and grading restraints (see "Mrs. Denzin's Expectations" below for more detailed information) to these "redo's". It is my desire to teach my students not only the importance of learning the difficult concepts of Algebra 2 and Trigonometry, but to also learn the importance of perseverance and improvement when a topic or concept becomes difficult.
It has been my experience that this is most likely the first time in your child's life that s/he will truly struggle a bit in mathematics. Please know this is completely normal. I will push your child extremely hard to not just learn a set of steps, but to learn why and when to use these "steps". You should see your child bringing home math homework often. Some evenings homework will only take 20 or 30 minutes, but other evenings it may take an hour or more. This class is a college-prep class so the demands outside of the classroom are ramped up.
All students have my cell phone number and I have set up a Google Classroom page where your child can ask questions the whole class can see, or s/he can send me a private message through Facebook Messenger or via text where I can help clear up questions. Per LMASD School Board policy, I am not able to contact students after 10 pm or before 7 am.
At the end of each day, the SMART Board presentation and homework given in class will be posted on Google Classroom.
