Required items:
- For foods units: apron, head gear and close-toed shoes
- For sewing unit: straight pins with colored heads and a pin cushion
- For all units: 3-ring binder, pencil, highlighter
- All food items and sewing projects will be provided in class at no charge.
Students start the year with a foods unit that covers basic kitchen equipment and measuring techniques, use of small appliances, use of the microwave oven, using the top of the stove, the oven and the broiler. Students will finish the year back in the kitchen learning the importance of breakfast and breakfast food preparation skills.
Shortly after the Thanksgiving break, students will begin a babysitting unit. They will learn about the physical development of children, babysitting dos and don'ts, child CPR, and shaken baby syndrome. For a final project, they will create a "hire me" poster to advertise their babysitting skills.
After the winter break, students will begin a sewing unit. They will learn the parts of a sewing machine and how to thread a sewing machine. They will contruct a locker caddy, made from a kit ordered from Haan Crafts.
This class is designed to give students basic life skills. Students may elect to expand upon these skills by taking FACS in 7th and/or 8th grade.
