Needed supplies:

• 3-ring binder just for FACS
• pencil, pen, highlighter
• apron, headgear, close-toed shoes for food labs
• candy, etc. for gingerbread houses
• straight pins (preferably ones with colored heads) and pin cushion

Students start out the year with foods.  Units covered include nutrition and MyPlate, microwave cooking, salads, grains, sandwiches and desserts.  December will be spent constructing and decorating their own gingerbread house.  When students return from Winter Break they will spend one class period cleaning the kitchens and then will begin a short unit on choices and decision-making.  In February they will begin sewing. There will be a review of using and threading the sewing machine.  Projects will involve construction of two items, a back pack, and boxers or pajama pants.  Both projects will be ordered in kit form from Haan Crafts.  The price of the small gingerbread house and the sewing projects is included in the course fee.  If students wish to construct a larger version of the gingerbread house, they will be asked to pay the difference between the one they chose and the small house.  More information will be sent home prior to the start of the project.
