Overview
Business can mean a lot of things and entail a variety of potential careers. The Business Education program at Lake Mills High School is intended to prepare students for a diverse range of goals. The first is based on the belief that every student needs to develop skills necessary to become an educated consumer and citizen while strengthening reading, writing, mathematical, and interpersonal skills. The second is that students should become equipped with the knowledge and technological skills necessary for being successful in post-secondary education and employment. All of the business education courses emphasize employability skills, such as teamwork, responsibility, accountability, leadership, oral and written communication skills, which are beneficial in any career.
Career Clusters
Career clusters identify pathways from secondary school to two- and four-year colleges, graduate school, and the workplace, so students can take courses and prepare in high school for what they would like to do in the future. This connection to future goals motivates students to work harder and enroll in more rigorous courses (States' Career Clusters Initiative, 2008). Career clusters link what students learn in school with the knowledge and skills they need for success in college and careers.
The Business and Information Technology Education Department at Lake Mills High School closely ties to preparing students for careers identified in 4 of the 16 career clusters. The four career clusters are Business, Management and Administration; Marketing, Information Technology and Finance.
